Over 60 years Kankakei Ropeway Koun Station welcome people as the gate of Kankakei in Shodoshima Island, one of the most beautiful landscape viewpoint in the Setouchi national park. From the peak of Kankakei, everybody notices the beauty of landscape composed with sky, inland sea and archipelago. But human life and culture of this area are also important elements. The experience of Art is to recognize that we are alive in the connection with this beautiful nature.

Treasure of the Kankakei is not only to see the beautiful view from the peak. 5 minute trip by the rope way is the experience to feel like walking above the deep forest. And 12 minute of waiting for the ropeway is the experience to feel the quality of time, observing the relationship between human and nature. For the renovation of this station, we proposed to design the place to discover Art, and beauty in the life of this Island. Name of the station Koun means `red clouds`. In autumn, the station is surrounded with colored trees and it looks as if being in the red clouds. Reflection of red trees on the glass, aluminum walls and wooden `cloud ceiling` will make your experience to be a part of landscape through the architecture.

　寒霞渓ロープウェイ紅雲駅

瀬戸内の自然の美しさを世界中の人たちに体験してもらう寒霞渓の玄関口として、寒霞渓ロープウェイ紅雲駅舎は 60 年間ものあいだたくさんの人たちを迎えてきました。2020 年 3 月、長年親しまれてきたこの紅雲駅舎のリニューアルを行いました。紅雲駅から山頂駅までの乗車時間は 5 分間、駅舎で乗車を待つ時間はおよそ 12 分間です。ほんの一瞬の小さな旅ですが、両側に切り立つ絶壁の間をゆっくりと移動するロープウェイから深い樹海を見下ろす体験は、あたかも空中を散歩しているようにも感じられます。私たちは、ロープウェイによる空中散歩を自然との関わりを深く感じられる芸術体験として捉え、その序章としての駅舎を設計しました。

「小さな旅のはじまり」

ロープウェイから体験する寒霞渓の美しさが空と森と海の交響曲だとすれば、駅舎はその開演を待つ、劇場のホワイエのように期待感を膨らませる場所にしたいと考えました。余計な飾りを削ぎ落とし、周囲の自然環境と向き合える空間を演出しています。これから始まる空中散歩への序章として、ゆっくりとした移動を通して、徐々に移り変わる空間の中で、自然と一体になってゆく感覚を楽しんでもらえる駅舎空間の設計としています。
