“Nagareru is an experimental gathering place newly created by the team at Yuzuriha, a social welfare corporation that has long supported people facing various difficulties such as abuse and poverty. It was born from the desire to create a place unconstrained by conventional frameworks of welfare.”

For those facing difficulties, and for those who are not. A place where everyone can move through the city as part of it, and pause when they need to.

While serving as a shelter for consultation support and temporary refuge for people in hardship, the lower floor is opened to the town as a café and a place for exchange. The building is a shop building located in an old temple-front town, and has undergone repeated renovations over many years.

In response to the accumulated fatigue of the building, infrastructure piping such as gas, water, and electricity was renewed, while waterproofing and structural reinforcement were carried out to restore the building to a sound condition. At the same time, memories remaining in the town—such as the entrance canopy—were preserved, and various plants were placed throughout the architecture. A series of design gestures were layered to help the building blend into the neighborhood while bringing new life into it.

“Nagareru” is not a completed facility. It is a place that gradually changes its form according to each situation, as architecture and people continue to relate to one another.

Architects Atelier Ryo Abe was involved from the earliest stages of the project, including concept development and property search. Through dialogue, we shared the process of spatial design and consistently carried the project through to construction supervision. Even after the completion of construction, we continue to work alongside the operating team, making adjustments and providing support in response to how the space is used and how relationships among people change, aiming for a design in which a sense of security grows over time.
