— Designing Distance to Create an Intermediate Realm of Care —

This project is a new group home where people with disabilities live together with staff support while developing greater independence. The site is in a changing urban neighborhood once characterized by small factories and now seeing an influx of new residents. Built alongside the existing vocational support facility, the group home includes a community building and consultation services, creating an open welfare hub for the emerging local community.

The community and consultation functions are placed near the entrance, with the residential area further inside. These three zones are connected by semi-outdoor terraces, creating a gradual transition from public to private. A long approach and southern open space establish distance from the neighborhood, while an expansive roof welcomes visitors. The community building has a low ceiling for intimacy, while the residential building has a generous floor-to-ceiling height, deep eaves, and terraces to gently connect the rooms with the outdoors. A garden courtyard lies between them.

The three roofs are set at different angles, creating layered connections between the courtyard and semi-outdoor spaces. Under the eaves and on the terraces, residents’ families and neighbors can meet and form new connections. These carefully calibrated distances support connections between residents and the wider community, giving shape to a new community within the changing neighborhood. Such encounters are embedded in the details that form these intermediate realms.

社会福祉法人天友会 共同生活援助〈てんゆう〉− ケアの中間領域づくり、距離のデザイン −

障害者がスタッフの介助を受けながら、自立した共同生活を目指すグループホームの新築計画である。敷地は、かつて町工場が集積し、流入世帯が増加し始めている市街地にある。既にある就労支援事業所の敷地に、交流棟と相談機能を併設したグループホームを計画し、新しい地域コミュニティの核となる、地域に開かれた福祉拠点を目指した。

建物は敷地手前に交流・相談機能、奥に生活領域を配置。分節した3つの区画を外部から内部へ段階的に関係づけ、半屋外テラスで連結している。旗竿敷地を活かした長いアプローチと南側の屋外空間で近隣との距離をつくり、伸びやかな屋根で訪問者を迎え入れる。交流棟は天井高さを抑えた親密な空間とし、生活棟は高い階高、深い軒とテラスで居室と外部を緩やかに連続させ、その間に中庭的な緑地を配置した。

3つの屋根は角度をずらして配置され、中庭と半屋外空間を重層的に繋いでいる。軒下やテラスでは、利用者の家族や近隣住民が出会い、繋がりが生まれる。段階的に設定された距離が、利用者と社会を繋ぐプロセスを支え、変わりつつある街にコミュニティの輪郭を立ち上げる。そうした場面を持続的に生み出す操作を、中間領域をつくるさまざまなディテールに組み込んだ。
